Electronic Shelf Label (ESL)

 Electronic Shelf Label (ESL)

What is an Electronic Shelf Label (ESL)? An Electronic Shelf Label (ESL) is a digital price tag used in retail stores to display product prices and other information electronically. Unlike traditional paper labels, ESLs can be updated remotely through a central system, eliminating the need for manual price changes.

Key Features of ESLs

1.Automated Price Updates-Prices can be changed remotely via a centralized system.

2.E-Paper-Low-power screens provide clear visibility and consume minimal energy.

3.WirelessCommunication -Usestechnologies like Wi-Fi, NFC, orRF forseamless updates.

4.Integration with POS Systems - Ensures synchronized pricing across digital and physicalstores.

5.Additional Functions - Some ESLs support QR codes, NFC for mobile interactions, stock updates, and promotional messages.

Working Principle

Wireless Communication

The embedded wireless private protocol receives updates from the base station. Unique identifiers (e.g., MAC addresses) ensure targeted updates.

Microcontroller (MCU)

Processes update commands and manages power states (sleeps when inactive).

Battery

Typically uses coin-cell batteries (e.g., CR2450) lasting 5 years due to ultra-low power consumption.

Key Functions

Network Hub

Deployed strategically in-store to ensure full coverage. Uses mesh networking (in some systems) to relay signals between tags and extend coverage.

Data Relay

Receives updatesfrom the backend via Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or cellular networks. Broadcasts encrypted data packetsto ESLs overlow-power wireless private protocols.

Two-Way Communication

Some systems enable tagsto send acknowledgments or sensor data (e.g., battery status) back to the backend
